The unattractive face of black beauty cosmetics

A desire for your skin to glow and feel beautiful with the use of cosmetics is not a sin. However, we have to be aware of what we are putting on our bodies to avoid preventable health problems.

The skin

Skin is actually our biggest organ and it soaks up every substance we apply to it, including environmental pollution. The average woman absorbs almost 5 pounds of skincare products through her skin within a year. Many products on the market contain harmful chemicals that have been linked directly to hormonal imbalances, DNA damage and cancer. Unattainable western beauty standards are causing women to consume more beauty products and thus exposing them to these harmful chemicals.

A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that “women of color use more beauty products and are disproportionately exposed to worrisome chemicals compared to white women”.

Women of color, a demographic that spends more money on cosmetics and personal care products, also largely consume skin-lightening creams, hair relaxers and feminine hygiene products. All of which are known to contain harmful chemicals.

A few facts

In 2016, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), examined 1200 products targeted towards black women. They noted that most of those products were made with unhealthy ingredients. Some products use formaldehyde releasing preservatives (which are widely present in black beauty products).

That can cause adverse reactions such as hair loss, scalp blisters, neck and face rashes, nosebleeds and many other health concerns. Formaldehyde was even labeled by the US government as a carcinogen product in 2011.

The solution for black and brown women, is to start spending wisely, by switching to less toxic beauty products that cater to their needs. Fortunately, many conscious black entrepreneurs want to tackle this issue and are providing options to this often ignored market. The result is more quality and healthy black beauty brands.
