The African continent is currently one of the fastest-growing regions when it comes to mobile growth, and financial technology companies that are building services to meet that rapidly-expanding market are getting a lot of attention. In the latest development, Kuda, a startup out of Nigeria that operates a popular mobile-first challenger bank for consumers and (soon) small businesses, is announcing that it has raised $10 million — the biggest seed round ever to be raised in Africa. The funding comes on the back of strong demand for its services and its ambitions — according to CEO Babs Ogundeyi — to become the go-to bank not just for those living on the continent, but for the African diaspora. “We want to bank every African on the planet, wherever you are in the world,” he said in an interview. How the US election result Impacts Africa

The result of the vote could have a profound impact on US foreign policy in Africa, the EU’s Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) says. During his tenure Trump has proposed a large-scale pullback of US forces abroad, including in West Africa, marking a strategic shift from the ‘war on terror’ to countering China’s growing influence in Africa through other means, says Giovanni Faleg, a senior analyst at the Paris-based EU agency.   “As competition mainly revolves around the predatory economic practices (of China) the first pillar of Trump’s strategy is advancing US trade and commercial ties with the region,” Faleg says. This included the Trump administration’s ‘Prosper Africa’ initiative whose objective is to streamline bureaucracy, expand the role of the private sector, and remove logistical trade barriers. “Trump has never personally considered Africa a priority region or traveled to sub-Saharan countries,” Faleg says, while “his rhetoric towards Africa in public speeches […]

Lashana Lynch makes history as the first Black female in the 25th Bond film

Since 2012, Lynch has imbued her characters with the very same quality – the fierce power and urgency of the present. An instinctual and deliberate artist, she is focused on the true story of the Black woman, on communicating her honestly and with purpose. We saw this in her nuanced, solid performance as the single mother and pilot Maria Rambeau in last year’s Captain Marvel, in which she successfully stretched the bounds of what a hero is meant to be, and we will see it again in her outing as the first ever female 007. Initially, when the Bond opportunity came about, Lynch had reservations about joining another franchise – about getting lost "behind the man", as she puts it – but on speaking with the producer Barbara Broccoli and the director Cary Joji Fukunaga, she understood that their intentions ran […]

more spotlight on Nollywood at Film Africa in London

Once Nollywood might have meant films that were low budget and high drama and aimed mostly at a West African audience. But Nigerian cinema has evolved and this year a slew of new film-makers are tackling grittier subjects – and winning international acclaim. A roster of screenings at autumn’s Film Africa festival in London reveals directors unafraid to look at issues such as gender equality, postnatal depression, and transatlantic migration. Nigeria’s film industry is now the second-biggest in the world, sandwiched between Bollywood (which comes first) and Hollywood. Although Nigeria releases roughly 1,000 films a year, few currently travel far beyond the continent or the African diaspora or get much global arthouse attention. "Living in Bondage" But increased visibility on platforms such as irokotv and Netflix is helping to increase international interest – as is a new generation of film-makers keen to tackle broader themes, says film […]
