Nigerian Afrobeats king Wizkid and international vocal powerhouse Tems have made another bragging right possible for Afrobeats. The duo won the award for Favorite RnB with their song ‘Essence’ featuring American singer Justin Bieber at the 2022 American Music Awards (AMAs). The prestigious award show was held on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. Wayne Brady hosted the show.
International superstar Wizkid made history by becoming the first African artiste to win an award for Favorite Afrobeats Artiste under the inaugural Afrobeats category at the AMAs. The singer was nominated alongside artists like Burna boy, Ckay, Tems, and Fireboy, who have also had a great music year. Fans have since posted congratulatory messages to their Afrobeats fave Wizkid. Tems was not left out as she added the award for Favorite Hip-hop to her list of awards for her contribution to the global hit song ‘Wait For me’ by Future and Drake.
