South African singer Tyla made history at the BET Awards 2024, taking home two prestigious awards: Best New Artist and Best International Act.
Her debut single “Water” launched her to global stardom, earning her numerous accolades, including the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024, making her the youngest African artist to receive a Grammy at just 22 years old.
At the BET Awards, Tyla, 22, beat out fellow African artist Ayra Starr, 41, and other international acts to win Best New Artist.
In her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to Africa, paying tribute to the African superstars who paved the way for her success.
“This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world guys.”
Tyla’s second win of the night came when she was awarded Best International Act, surpassing Asake, Ayra Starr, Aya Nakamura (France), and other global artists.
