Burundi’s rebel president set to vacate as citizens turn out for voting despite COVID-19 outbreak

The country of Burundi on Wednesday saw its citizens turn out in thousands to vote for a new President despite the CoronaVirus outbreak as the 15-year reign of Pierre Nkurunziza comes to an end.

Nkurunziza had  reigned in Burundi for three terms since 2015 with human rights being violated and over 400,000 citizens fleeing to neighboring countries for safety.

Former Army General, Mr. Ndayishimiye who worked  as Cabinet minister for interior and security for Nkurunziza is  the candidate for the ruling party which has Mr. Rwasa as its main challenger.

Mr. Rwasa preached about change in one of his campaign grounds as he kicked against the injustice by the ruling party. Rwasa said “Life is becoming more and more unbearable, the time for change has come”.
