Getting Ready For The End of The CFA

Is Africa ready for the end of the CFA franc? Those of us rooting for the end of this controversial currency need to seriously start thinking about how the economies of several countries will fare without it. The fourteen African countries within the CFA franc zone would return to their own currencies, instantly creating barriers to inter-African trade. In addition to the affect on trade, dismissal the CFA franc will hopefully leave the French treasury no choice but to return foreign currency reserves to each country. If this were to happen, there is the question of whether each of these fourteen countries will have enough reserves to cover their monthly imports. Also, considering that these new independent currencies will be easy targets for currency speculators, there is concern that central banks may not have enough reserves to keep the currencies […]

Studying In Africa

A recent study shows that Africa is under-represented in world-class schools. Even if we have the most Voltairean speeches, or great minds working in prestigious institutions such as NASA, Harvard, or the IEP (Institute for Economics and Peace), none of this will hide the misery of the continent’s educational system. There are few exceptions to this reality such as the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar (UCAD) in Senegal, which is the only French-speaking sub-Saharan African university in a number of international rankings. UCAD aside, the levels of education in Africa are poor and students face many difficulties. On average, only 5% of young people have access to higher education and this glaring lack of infrastructure of course means less graduates and less representation of Africans in all fields across the board. Education in Africa is experiencing a major crisis. What […]

Zimbabwe The Lost City

On September 5th in 1871, the German explorer Karl Mauch stumbled on a stone wall in the heart of Southern Africa.  Like any worthy representative of nineteenth-century Euro-centrism, the explorer couldn’t bring himself to attribute the ruins to Bantu culture. He wanted to see a lost biblical city of the Queen of Sheba (Ophir), the famous mines of King Solomon. These immense granite ramparts, surrounded by numerous carved stone buildings adorned with statues are the last vestige of the city of Great Zimbabwe. Back then it was one of the jewels of the Shona nation in the Middle Ages. All the powerful structures, fortifications, religious and residential buildings are of pure African inspiration. Researchers unfortunately have taken their time to return what belongs to the Bantu. Unknown was the splendor of the Monomotapa empire whose name means  “lord of the […]

Middle Age Misery Peaks at Age of 47.2, Economist Says

We are looking beyond ideation stage to, at the very least, beta, and for companies that are corporate-ready. Retailers want to see it all, so they usually have not precisely identified one tech they want to focus on. Visual search and fit-tech are definitely trends.. Future-focused Even so, many believe there are less problematic and more effective ways to approach outdoors overcrowding than to avoid geotagging – it’s just not that simple. The Ashanti African Tale: Ananse The Spider

Let’s dive into the  enthralling Ashanti culture of the Gold Coast (presently known as Ghana) and unfold the story of the great Ananse. Like most African tales, these stories were not physically recollected, but rather verbally passed down, from one generation to another. Soon enough, the Anansesem, or spider tales, gained popularity throughout the whole of West Africa.  This mythological trickster of West African culture is often referred to as Kweku Ananse. The name Kweku, meaning Wednesday, was given to the spider because it is said that his soul appeared on that day. Kweku has many incarnations, the most well known being the naughty and mischievous son of Nyame, God of the sky, who transformed him into a spider as punishment.  In other tales, Kweku is even described to be the creator of the world. Although Ananse is most commonly known as […]
