Deto Black, the Lagos-based Rapper Going Global

To sum up her creative output, the Lagos-based rapper, artist, and model Deto Black points to her Twitter bio, which reads simply: ‘Yung Everything.’ It might initially sound like a throwaway comment, but it turns out it’s her guiding philosophy. “I don’t believe in titles at all,” she says during an interview. “I find them quite harmful.” Born Deto Tejuoso, the 25-year-old artist has already rapped sex-positive verses on alté tracks, racked up writing and acting credits on viral films Three Pills and Vengeance of Love, become a muse to her childhood friend Mowalola Ogunlesi, and even headed up her own photography series. Deto’s technicolor wigs, knee-high boots, and mini-skirts may have earned her style icon status in Lagos, but her audience is increasingly international, with 20,000 followers on Instagram alone. And her interests extend even beyond these creative fields: Deto is about to become a chartered accountant, with […]

Senegalese youth denounce unlawful Immigration after Rise in deaths at sea

Young people in Senegal held a national day of mourning on Friday for 140 migrants killed in a shipwreck as they headed to Europe last month, sparking debate about unemployment and migration in the West African country. There has been a significant rise this year in the number of migrants taking rickety boats from West Africa to the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory, in search of better opportunities, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. In September alone, 14 boats carrying 663 migrants left Senegal and about a quarter of them ran into difficulties or was shipwrecked, the IOM said. It has not yet compiled data for October but said departures and deaths continued to rise. “Misinformation from smugglers leaves many people unaware of the realities and risks of irregular migration,” said Bakary Doumbia, the agency’s chief of mission in […]

Jerry Rawlings, Ghana’s ‘Junior Jesus’

Jerry Rawlings, who as a young military officer orchestrated two coups to seize control of the government in Ghana, then led the African country for 20 years, guiding it through a period of relative stability with an idiosyncratic blend of autocratic rule and democratic reform, died Nov. 12 at a hospital in the capital city of Accra. He was 73. Mr. Rawlings was a 32-year-old Ghanaian air force officer when he first attempted to overthrow what he considered a corrupt national government in May 1979. He was jailed but soon became a hero to the country’s poor people and military. With the help of disaffected soldiers and non-commissioned officers, he escaped from jail on June 4, 1979, then proceeded to a radio station to urge his followers to seize power. By the end of the day, the country’s military leader, […]
