Kamaru Usman Loses UFC Title

The Welterweight championship of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was held earlier today, August 21, 2022, at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, USA. The event featured a match between Nigerian-American UFC champion Kamaru Usman and Jamaica-born Briton Leon Edwards.

Kamaru is also known as “The Nigerian nightmare.” He went into the fight confident to retain his title. Kamaru had won a match against Edward seven years ago as part of his 19-fight win streak. Fans also shared the same confidence, and American rapper Drake bet $430,000, an equivalent of 120 million Naira on Kamaru winning the game.

The match started with Usman throwing blows to Edwards’s face and sides. In the fourth round, Kamaru had a 3-1 lead. An ankle injury restricted Kamaru from making moves but still landed kicks on Edwards. Edwards shocked the fans in the fifth round, he landed a solid kick on the Nigerian’s head. The kick knocked out Kamaru and secured a win for Edwards. Edwards is now the new UFC welterweight champion. He is also Britain’s second-ever UFC champion.
