VON Under Fire for False Report on Nigeria’s WAFCON Victory

The Voice of Nigeria (VON), the digital platform of a Nigerian media station, has falsely reported that Morocco defeated Nigeria at the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Last night, the Super Falcons defeated Morocco in a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory to claim its record-extending 10th WAFCON.

However, in a report published on its website, VON stated that the North African country defeated Nigeria with two goals to nil.

In a wave of reactions on X, users slammed the news outlet for publishing a false story.

Some of the users described the publication as “shameful, unprofessional, and unpatriotic”.

Others argued that the publication was done with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), “leading to non-credibility, non-verification”.

“I was talking to AI about this, few days ago. Information output and its credibility, anyone can put out information and google marks its credibility without verification. AI provides it as viable information and it’s all wrong,” a user wrote.

“It is shameful, unprofessional and unpatrotic. @voiceofnigeria should issue an official apology to the nation,” a user wrote.

Another user said: “This goes against the journalism code, again. Nigeria Guild of Editors needs to do more to sanitize the journalism profession, this is shameful and embarrassing, can’t believe an editor approved this.”

A comment also read: “This journalist should be ashamed of himself. This is how they spread fake news drawing conclusions without proper investigation or confirmation.”

“But that reporter needs to be fired. Or reprimanded in some way. Imagine making such a mistake on a national newspaper on an international stage,” another X user commented
