Nigeria Reinstates Original National Anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed a bill restoring the country's original independence anthem, 'Nigeria, We Hail Thee'. The anthem, written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams, will replace 'Arise O' Compatriots', which has been in use since 1978. President Tinubu has long been a proponent of reinstating the original anthem, arguing that it better represents Nigeria's values.  In a past interview, he stated, "If I had my way, I would bring back our first national anthem... It described us much better. I don't know why we changed it. It's about service, diversity, and commitment to value our nation-building." https://twitter.com/afropolitainmag/status/1796302139670647079?s=46&t=DzdMgcAjlH4pEvQAl2TuQw The move has received mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some expressing nostalgia for the old anthem and others criticizing the decision as a step backward into the country's colonial past.  Afropop singer Teni took to her X handle to […]

The inauguration took place on Thursday, following a disputed election held earlier this month. Deby Itno, who seized power three years ago after his father's death, has promised to focus on key sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare. In his first presidential address, Deby Itno emphasized the need for collective effort to bring about positive change. "I've heard your yearning for change, and I've understood you. Let's all play our part, individually and collectively, to bring about the change we all hope, desire and expect," he said. Despite concerns over electoral irregularities, Western leaders have congratulated Deby Itno on his victory. The US State Department acknowledged "troubling shortcomings" but welcomed the milestones in Chad's transition process. The British […]

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been banned from running in the country’s upcoming election due to his previous criminal conviction.

Jacob Zuma, former South African President, has been barred from running in the upcoming election due to a prior criminal conviction. The highest court in South Africa, the Constitutional Court, issued a ban against Jacob Zuma on Monday. Zuma, who stepped down as president in 2018 amid corruption allegations, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2021 for contempt of court. The Constitutional Court cited a section of the constitution that disqualifies individuals who have been sentenced to more than 12 months in prison without the option of a fine from standing for office. Judges said he would only be able to serve as an MP five years after his sentence had been completed. The ruling comes just two days after Zuma launched the manifesto of his new political party, uMkhonto We Sizwe (MK), in front of more than […]
