South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs18) Nominees List

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has revealed the nominees for this year’s South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs18). This year, the SAFTAs introduced five exciting new categories, including Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Special Effects in Hair and Makeup, and Best Original Song for a Telenovela, TV Drama, or Feature Film. South Africa’s top production houses, Tshedza Pictures and Burnt Onion Productions lead the nominations list with 29 and 22 nominations, respectively.  Other nominees include Thembinkosi Mthembu, Nomzamo Mbatha, Bianca Amato, Clement Maosa, Je-ani Swiegelaar, Eugene Olof, Renate Stuurman, Tinah Mnumzana, Siyabonga Raymond Sepotokele, Mmabatho Mogomotsi, Vusi Kunene, and many others.  Additionally, posthumous nominations were awarded to Mpho Sebeng and Connie Chiume, to acknowledge their contributions to the South African film industry.  Created in 2006, the South African Film and Television Awards is an annual South African […]

South African Film ‘Bogoshi Bjaka’ Scoops Two International Awards

Bogoshi Bjaka, a film starring late actors Charles “Big Boy” Maja and Candy “Vho Makhadzi” Moloi recently scooped two international awards at the Crown Wood International Film Festival in Kolkata, India. Bogoshi Bjaka' is a suspense-filled thriller that focuses on a Pedi Royal Family where two brothers war over their ailing father's throne. 'Bogashi Bjaki' takes on a "Cain and Abel" premise where Mothapo, the older brother, is expected to take on the throne but his younger jealous brother, Lerumo, contests him. The conflict not only angers the ancestors but makes their father gravely ill. The Royal House is then split into factions and the fight for power ensues. Ethiopia’s First Female Superhero comic, Bags Nomination

Ethiopia’s First Female Superhero Comic "Hawi" is Nominated for "Best Graphic Novel". This nomination is at the annual NOMMO Awards for African Speculative Fiction. The NOMMO Awards are often presented in four categories. These categories include; "Best Novel", "Best Novella", "Best Short Story" and "Best Graphic Novel". Written by Beserat Debebe, Hawi is Ethiopia's first female superhero comic. Meanwhile, Jember, written by Debebe, made it onto the long-list in the same category. "Jember" was the country's first-ever comic; from ETAN comics "Centers a female superhero, Hawi is the story of a young Ethiopian woman named Ement Legesse.
