Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, the Nigerian actress, has officially unveiled the trailer for her highly anticipated directorial debut ‘Mother’s Love’.
The feature film, which runs for 1 hour and 42 minutes, first premiered last year at the 50th anniversary of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), generating buzz on social media.
‘Mother’s Love’ tells the story of Labake, a woman who must rely on her wisdom and vision to hold her family together as it faces the threat of disintegration. The narrative centres on Labake’s fierce love for her husband, Rotimi, and her daughter Adebisi.
The plot thickens when Adebisi, who has lived a privileged and affluent life, leaves home for the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. There, she meets Obaro, a fellow corps member, and her world is turned upside down. Adebisi’s relationship with Obaro introduces the film’s central conflict: a clash of economic and social classes.
Even by modest standards, Obaro’s life in the infamous Makoko slum in Lagos is a harsh reality—a far cry from the comfort Adebisi is used to. While Adebisi embraces the change and does not mind the slum lifestyle, her father is enraged by her decision to move in with Obaro, setting the stage for a tense family drama.
The film stars a talented cast including Olumide Oworu, Ifeanyi Kalu, and Noray Nehita.
For Omotola, who is already an established icon in the industry, stepping behind the camera was not initially part of the plan.
Last year, the actress revealed that ‘Mother’s Love’ was created out of a need to mark her full return to Nollywood.
“Mother’s Love came as a story that I shot because I was under pressure to be honest. I am not even going to lie; I have been very truthful about the journey to Mother’s Love,” she added.
“I just talked to my producer and said, ‘What if we did a feature film? And that was it. And immediately, back-to-back, we actually started planning for ‘Mother’s Love’. I just looked for it because I have stories.
“And at the end of the day, we shot ‘Mother’s Love’ in less than about two weeks.
“That is why it took so long for it to come out. I was just self-conscious of myself, you know. And, you know, like, it is so people are laughing at me. Like, it is not good enough. Like, I do not have a choice.”
