MTN is the first telecommunications company to launch 5G in Nigeria. In December 2021, MTN alongside Mafab communications won a bid to start the 5G spectrum services in Nigeria. However, MTN wasn’t able to launch 5G until August 2022.
The launch would start in 7 cities in Nigeria: Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, Maiduguri, Kano and Owerri but no date has been disclosed yet.The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) expects that by 2025, 5G coverage would hit 70 percent.
With this feat, Nigeria has become the 4th African country to launch 5G. Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa have already launched 5G while 14 others are running trials.
