Locals building cordons to combat oil spillage in Mauritius

Locals in Mauritius have volunteered to build cordons to help elevate the city from the oil spillage on the Island.

An MV Wakashio which was carrying 4,000 tonnes of f oil fuel ran aground on a coral reef off the Indian Ocean island on 25 July, spilling the oil into the waters of the neighboring Island.

Their actions go against an order from the government asking people to leave the clean-up to local authorities but “People have realised that they need to take things into their hands. We are here to protect our fauna and flora,” environmental activist Ashok Subron told AFP news agency.
