Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, is preparing to release a new album with his band Egypt 80, and it’s been announced that rock icon Lenny Kravitz will be serving as the album’s executive producer.
“As long-time fans of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and the whole Kuti family, we’re honoured to announce that SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80 have joined Record Kicks’ roster,” the Milan-based label announced on their website.
On Monday, Kuti shared a joint Instagram post with Record Kicks, showing Kuti, Kravitz, and Marciszewer deeply engaged in a trancelike studio session.
“Aw yeah,” Kravitz comments to Kuti as they nod to the mesmerizing melody. Kravitz then turns to Marciszewer, requesting a modification, to which Marciszewer responds with an assuring gesture.
“Afrobeat is a powerful genre that has inspired me for many years,” Kravitz said in a statement. “I’m honoured to be a part of this project and to help bring Seun’s vision to life.”
Seun Kuti has passionately maintained his father’s legacy, and has released four albums with Egypt 80, in addition to collaborations with Black Thought and Janelle Monae. “Think Africa”, “Many Things”, “From Africa With Fury: Rise”, “A Long Way to the Beginning”, and “Black Times” are some of the notable works of the Afrobeat virtuoso.
“I’m grateful to have Lenny Kravitz on board,” Seun Kuti said. “He brings a new perspective and energy to the project, and his support means a lot to me.”
The album, which is yet to be titled, will be released on October 4 via Italian label Record Kicks, and will feature production from Sodi Marciszewer, who worked with Fela Kuti.
Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 are set to embark on a North American tour beginning on June 8, and will make stops in Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit, and other cities.
“This album is going to be special,” Seun Kuti promised. “We’re pushing the boundaries of Afrobeat and creating something new and exciting. I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
Six years after his last release, Lenny Kravitz marked his return in 2024 with Blue Electric Light. The album features three hit singles: “TK241,” “Human,” and “Paralyzed,” showcasing Kravitz’s continued musical mastery.
With no collaborations, Kravitz proves his artistic prowess remains unwavering.
