“I Bought $1 at ₦1900” — RMD Opens Up on Challenges of Filming Revelations

Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), the Nigerian actor, says one of his biggest challenges in producing ‘Revelations’ was the naira’s steep depreciation during the film’s shoot.

Speaking in a recent interview on Arise TV, RMD shared behind-the-scenes details about the Nollywood-Hollywood collaboration.

The 64-year old actor revealed that he “bought a dollar for N1,900” during the film’s production last year February.

RMD added that his commitment to telling the story kept him focused despite the financial strain.

“I’ve had that story in my head for a long time and I was just looking for how to tell it differently, and the result is Revelations,” he said.

“Every character has something to hide in this movie, every character has something they would rather not go back to.

“But doing this was not too different from other things that I’ve done, but the fact that I was doing it against a backdrop of western style. Like the whole cowboy thing and horses.

“Up until this production, I had never ridden a horse. My horse training was in one hour, I didn’t have enough time. I was trained in less than an hour and I was riding.

“Actual shoot was about sixteen days, but planning took a longer time. I told them that I don’t have a budget that a Hollywood production has.

“One of the biggest challenges I had doing this film was that the naira was at its lowest because it was around February last year. I bought a dollar for N1,900 to one dollar when we were producing this film.

“So it was quite a challenge, but when you’re passionate about something you don’t let money stop you. You just go ahead and tell the story. If you don’t have the money you’ll raise it from other people.”

‘Revelations’ tells the story of a Nigerian immigrant and his American wife as they grapple with infertility, cultural differences, and secrets that threaten their marriage.

The movie cast features Ogbenetega Mofe-Damijo, Chioma Akpotha, Nnamdi Kanaga, Chidera Adiele, Seun Akindele, Tanya Price, and Alex Boyé.

‘Revelations’ hit cinemas nationwide on August 15.
