South African singer-songwriter Tyla won the award for ‘Best Afrobeats’ at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) for her hit song ‘Push 2 Start’.

The victory was notable as Tyla prevailed over a highly competitive field of Nigerian heavyweights.

While Tyla clinched the top Afrobeats honour, she missed out on a second award, with ‘Push 2 Start’ losing in the ‘Best Choreography’ category.

Other African nominees also left empty-handed; Ayra Starr did not win ‘MTV Push Performance of the Year’, and Burna Boy was unsuccessful in the ‘Video for Good’ category.

The night’s overall biggest winner was pop icon Lady Gaga, who took home four awards. Her wins included ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘Best Art Direction’, ‘Best Direction’, and ‘Best Collaboration’ for ‘Die With a Smile’ with Bruno Mars.

The ceremony also featured historic inaugural awards. American rap legend Busta Rhymes was honoured with the first-ever ‘Rock the Bells Visionary Award’, while Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin received the inaugural ‘Latin Icon Award’.

The 2025 VMAs were held on Sunday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and marked the first time the event was broadcast on the CBS network.
