Next year's Academy Awards was supposed to be a big anticipated celebration for Nigeria. The country's first-ever submission into the Best International Feature Film category was a huge step forward in film representation for the nation. With actress turned filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji's directorial debut, Lionheart, this year's nomination was poised to position Nigeria for an accolade, but unfortunately, the film was disqualified. To be a contender in the Best International Feature Film category, which was previously called Best Foreign Language Film, the submissions must be in a dialect apart from English. Officially, the Academy requires “a predominantly non-English dialogue track” in order for consideration. Golden Eaglets’ campaign for a sixth world title in Brazil came to an end with a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands early on Wednesday morning to the chagrin of football fans across the country. Ajax young forward Sontje Hansen netted a hat-trick to propel the Netherlands past Nigeria 3-1 and into the quarter-finals at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019™. The five-time world champions showed frailty in defence and lack of coordination and cutting edge in attack throughout the tournament, scoring nine goals and conceding another nine in four matches. A 12-year-old boy from Ghana just made headline news for a reason that is bringing intellectual communities to a heel. The young man is Viemens Bamfo. He is now the youngest student in the institution's history to earn admission into the University of Ghana. BBC had the opportunity to interview the young scholar and his father on their Focus on Africa series. They learned that the young man aspires to be the president of Ghana with ambitions to make the country truly independent by the age of 40. You can listen to the interview HERE.
