mystery Fish becomes South Africa’s biggest lockdown discovery in Groenvlei lake

There have been rains of fish in Groenvlei lake, in South Africa bringing together massive locals in the vicinity to take advantage of the fish hunting. The fish were introduced in the 1800s and have proliferated so much that they threaten the lake's ecosystem. So park managers like Thulani Ndlovu, an employee at CapeNature, are trying to curb numbers of the invasive species. "We eradicate common carp, for the benefit of biodiversity here in Groenvlei, we donate it to our local communities." The carps used to be turned into fertilizer. Now the fish help feeding the locals in Sedgefield, the closest town that heavily relies on tourism. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the industry has collapsed overnight. Mali: Opposition Openly rejects ECOWAS Proposals for a third time

In what will be described as a recurrent struggle, the Malian opposition has rejected for the third time on Thursday, a compromise aimed at solving the country's political crisis, which has lasted for weeks. The June 5 movement asked for the resignation of president Ibrahim Boubakar Keita and accused his government of responsibility for the current chaos. This followed the meeting of the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS, who urged Keita to create a unity government and that 31 members of parliament resign. "By asking the members of parliament to resign, ECOWAS has failed," said Marcelin Guenguéré, Member of Parliament for the party 'Mali Qui Bouge'. "It's not their place to ask for that. There are other solutions than asking for the resignation of a number of MPs." The 31 MPs have so far refused to resign. […]

COVID-19: Seven Zimbabwe babies stillborn in one night at hospital

Seven babies were stillborn at Harare Central Hospital in Zimbabwe on Monday night after urgent treatment was delayed because of staffing issues, two doctors have confirmed to the BBC. Nurses are on strike nationwide because of a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other concerns, and the maternity wards were overwhelmed. One doctor said Monday's deaths were "the tip of the iceberg". The health sector has recently been hit by a Covid-19 procurement scandal. It is alleged that multi-million dollar contracts were awarded to buy supplies at inflated prices - and the health minister has been sacked over the allegations. A leaked government response to senior doctors, who wrote to complain about conditions and to threaten strike action, acknowledged "challenges" in hospitals, an "increase in poor outcomes" and a serious shortage of medical supplies because of a lack of […]
