AFRICAN RENAISSANCE MONUMENT

Have you been to Dakar, Senegal? Over there is one of Africa's tourist attractions. The African Renaissance Monument is a 50 meters tall bronze-medal statue.  The statue comprises a man, a woman and a child. This mighty statue is on the top of one of the double hills which is known as Collines des Mamaelles just outside Dakar.  It was designed by an Architect - Pierre Goudiaby, and the statue is looking over the Atlantic Ocean. The statue packs a lot of attraction however it has also been heavily criticized because of so many reasons; one of which is the money spent in building this great statue.

ANTICIPATING DAVIDO’S NEW ALBUM

A lot of Davido's fans are happy as he made a tweet on August 13, 2022 that he's working on a new album. A lot of his fans will be anticipating this, since the last time he released an album was 2020 in which he featured several artists both foreign and local.  This Year, the African star, Davido only released a single called "Stand strong." He revealed that the single is an opening to his upcoming album called "We rise by lifting others." However, in an interview that premiered on Apple Music, the music star revealed that his upcoming album will no longer be called "We rise by lifting others." His reason is not known, but he is yet to name the album.

POLICE DISMISS CARDINAL OPEYEMI KADIRI FOR RIGHTS VIOLATION

Cardinal Opeyemi Kadiri has been dismissed from the police force for violation of rights.  The police officer was enlisted into the force on the 6th of December, 2016. Cardinal Kadiri abused his authority and he was caught in the act. Kadiri stopped a commuter by the side of the road and searched his phone. The commuter took a video while the harassment was taking place. Not only did Kadiri abuse his power, he also went against the directive of the inspector general of the police force (IGP). He's the third to be dismissed recently for right violation The police want his dismissal to serve as a warning for other police officers to maintain order, professionalism and civility when dealing with members  of the public as they discharge their duties. His dismissal took effect on the 12th of August, 2022.

The trailer for "The Woman King," starring Viola Davis came out on the 6th of July, 2022. The movie is an historical epic inspired by the true events that happened in one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The film tells the real story of women warriors of an all-time army. It is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has seen. IKORODU BOIS, ESSENCE VIDEO. 

The Ikorodu Bois are at it again. Nigeria's "Ikorodu bois" namely Babatunde Sanni, Muiz Sanni, Malik Sanni and Fawas Aina became a social media sensation following their ingenious method of video production.  They rose to fame after re-enacting the trailer of the movie "Extraction 2". And they were even invited to the premier of the movie. After their rise, they have received recognition from Will Smith, Alvaro Morte and so many others.  This time around, they have produced their own version of the video of "Essence" originally sung by Wizkid featuring Tems. ARGUNGU FISHING FESTIVAL

Africa's biggest fishing celebration is the Argungu festival held in Kebbi, Nigeria. The national festival takes place in February every year and marks the end of the farming season and the beginning of the fishing season. The Argungu Fishing Festival or Argungu Dance Festival takes four days and is also held in other northern states like Niger in the north-western part of Northern Nigeria. These regions are made up of fertile river areas.  The majority of fishermen are followers of Islam and also predominantly farmers. Kanta Museum is the main historical centre in Argungu for visitors across the globe. People from around the world travel to Argungu just to witness the occasion. THE PACESETTER: BIYI BANDELE

Biyi Bandele, the director of the first Nigerian Netflix original series 'Blood Sisters' and the forthcoming Netflix film 'Ẹlẹ́ṣin Ọba' dies at 54. Prior to his death, Biyi Bandele was an exemplary writer and pacesetter in the filmmaking industry. He was known for directing the movie adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel 'Half of a yellow sun'. He also directed the series 'Blood Sisters'.  “Ẹlẹ́ṣin Ọba,” the movie he directed just before his death is an adaptation of Wole Ṣóyínká’s Death and the King’s Horseman. It is expected to make its Netflix debut later this year, while its screening premiers at the Toronto International Film Festival by September. Some of his books are 'Burma boy', 'the king's rifle' and so on.  The cause of his death is not yet clear.

A NEW ERA IN TECH, FOR KENYA

Times are changing and we are now in the era of technology (tech). Tech has created so many high paying job opportunities for youths and other unemployed individuals. Such individuals have been nicknamed "tech Bros". Examples of career paths in tech are coding, systems engineering, UIUX, data analytics and so much more.  So many people in different African countries have gone out of their way to learn tech. In Kenya, you no longer need to go out of your way to be a "tech bro". Because Kenya has become the first African country to add coding to the schools curriculum.  It's amazing to see their seriousness about youth empowerment and development. Kenya now teaches coding as a subject in schools. They sure do deserve some accolades.

‘AMAZON STATUE’ UNVEILED. 

The 'Amazon' statue has been unveiled in Benin, a French speaking West African country.  The statue was made to honor women warriors of Dahomey. The kingdom of Dahomey existed from 1625 till 1894. They had the world's only all-female army called 'the Amazons'  In order to reclaim its past and correct biased historical accounts, Benin built a 30 meter high Amazon statue. With this statue, they can embrace their past, pay homage to and engrave the memory of the fearless women that protected and served their native land and finally, commemorate female heroism!
