Grammy award-winning Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo had set a record as the third African to win the reputable Polar Music Prize. The Polar Music Prize is a Swedish international award founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, and it is awarded to one contemporary musician and one classical musician annually. The music prize is usually referred to as the Nobel Prize of Music.
The Polar Music Prize has been awarded to legendary musicians such as Elton John, Ray Charles, and Bruce Springsteen. Angelique Kidjo is to be included in the list of notable winners of the prestigious music prize as she won the award alongside Arvo Pärt from Estonia and Chris Blackwell from the UK. The other African winners are South African singer Mariam Makeba who won in 2002, and Senegalese singer Youssou N’dour, who won in 2013.
