The ‘Amazon’ statue has been unveiled in Benin, a French speaking West African country.
The statue was made to honor women warriors of Dahomey. The kingdom of Dahomey existed from 1625 till 1894. They had the world’s only all-female army called ‘the Amazons’
In order to reclaim its past and correct biased historical accounts, Benin built a 30 meter high Amazon statue. With this statue, they can embrace their past, pay homage to and engrave the memory of the fearless women that protected and served their native land and finally, commemorate female heroism!
