Nigerians React as Temi Otedola Officially Changes Her Name to Temi Ajibade

Actress Temi Otedola, daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, has officially changed her surname to “Ajibade” on Instagram after her marriage to Afrobeats star Mr Eazi, whose real name is Oluwatosin Ajibade.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2025, staged a line-up of glamorous weddings in Monaco, Dubai, and Iceland.

Their traditional wedding in Dubai and private church service in Iceland attracted global attention, but Temi’s decision to adopt her husband’s name has sparked the biggest debate online.

For years, Nigerian feminists and social commentators have argued over whether women should keep their maiden names or take their husband’s surname. Temi’s move has now reopened the conversation.

On X, opinions were sharply divided.

Valar Dohaeris (@Ramses_Phoenix1) mocked critics, writing: “If Temi Otedola change her name to Ajibade, who you be wey you say you no go change your name?”

Anyanwu Victor (@AnyanwuVic36625) said the matter should not even be a debate, “Should a woman bears her father’s name and still be with the husband? This shouldn’t be a topic of discuss.”

Another user, Aliyy Musa (@Aliyyyou), insisted, “A woman should bear the name of her father.”

Dark Diamond (@Darkknighthood1) praised Temi, noting, “Billionaire pikin claim her husband name. Poor girls dey cry say she no suppose leave her papa name. Congratulations to Mr Eazi and Mrs Temi Ajibade jare.”

Youngstarabc (@youngstarabc) poked fun at the situation, “Temi Ajibade but her handle na still Temi Otedola :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: who is f**ling who abeg? :joy:”

Adachukwu (@Adachukwu_) scolded critics, saying, “You people are angry Temi is now bearing Ajibade? Una really no get wetin dey worry una.”

Reactions were not limited to X. On Facebook, comments poured in as well.

Augustine Oluwaseun wrote, “Even if she drops her father’s name, the father (Otedollar) will not bother bcos laslas, na rich man’s name she go still dey bear. So, it’s a matter of moving from riches to riches….na Punch & Poor man pikin go think say dem go later dey the same level.”

Denzel’s View, Life and Relationship posted, “He’s the head, she’s the neck. There’s no head without a neck and the neck won’t function properly without the head. Congratulations to them. Love is indeed beautiful.”

Franklyn Mbachu Odinaka added, “Rich man give him daughter advice, poor people dey laugh the man.”

Another Facebook user, Gabriel Gabriel, stressed that marriage is teamwork, “Many women don’t understand this fact, but again men should understand that being the boss in marriage is different with that of your employees. In marriage you need to listen to your wife carefully, don’t act like you’re always right and your words should be final. You will need to be flexible in order to keep the house in check. Marriage is partnership.”

Temi Otedola, now Temiloluwa Ajibade, has clearly set tongues wagging, and whether Nigerians support or oppose her decision, the debate over surnames in marriage shows no sign of ending anytime soon.
