Darkoo Blames Peter of P-Square For Video Takedown

Nigerian-British rapper Darkoo has accused Peter Okoye, one-half of the legendary Afrobeats duo P-Square, of sabotaging the music video for her track Focus on Me.

In a candid social media post, Darkoo detailed the ordeal she faced when the video for Focus on Me, her reimagining of P-Square’s iconic hit Do Me, was removed from YouTube for six days. The rapper claimed that Peter Okoye’s actions stemmed not from copyright concerns but from personal grievances, alleging that he wanted to feature on the song himself.

“Let me be clear: I had all the necessary clearance for the sample. This isn’t my first rodeo using a sample, and I did everything by the book,” Darkoo stated.

She further revealed that P-Square’s management, including Jude and Paul Okoye, had been supportive throughout the process. However, Peter reportedly acted independently, citing “disrespect” as his justification for taking the video down.

Darkoo, who grew up idolizing P-Square’s trailblazing contributions to Afrobeats, expressed deep disappointment at the turn of events. “It’s heartbreaking because I grew up admiring him. To see someone I once looked up to actively trying to hurt me and block my success is incredibly painful,” she wrote.

Despite the setback, the Gangsta rapper maintained that she had gone above and beyond to ensure proper clearance, including securing contracts and paperwork from all contributors. “For the record: I respected their rights and handled everything correctly. This isn’t how our OGs are supposed to behave,” she concluded.

Born in Nigeria and raised in London, Darkoo burst onto the music scene with her genre-blending sound, seamlessly fusing Afrobeats, rap, and R&B. Her breakthrough single Gangsta not only dominated the UK charts but also established her as one of the most promising voices of her generation.
