Ethiopian track runner Tigist Assefa has made history after blazing to the finish line at the Berlin marathon. The 28-year-old athlete competed in the marathon on Sunday, September 25, 2022. This is the athlete’s second-ever marathon, and she finished in a record time of 2:15:37, breaking the Ethiopian record in the process. She also ended the race with the third-fastest women’s marathon time in history.
Assefa ran a 19-minute personal best at the marathon and outran the 2:18:11 record set by Kenyan Gladys Cherono in 2018. She has now added this record to her 400m personal best record of 54.05. The records ahead of Assefa’s record are Brigid Kosgei’s 2019 world record of 2:14:04 and Paula Radcliffe’s 2003 record of 2:15:25.
